Printing and Home Folders on IRPS1-UCSD

Home Folders

All students have a home folder, which is located on the IRPS main server, also known as IRPS1-UCSD.  Home folders are conveniently located in the ‘Home’ directory on the IRPS server and named according to username.  For example – Johnny B. Student, whose username is jstudent, would have the following home folder:  \\ucsd-irps1\home\jstudent.

Mapping a Drive:

The easiest way to access your folder on a regular basis is to create a mapped drive.  This will make your computer act as though it has an additional drive, which is actually your home folder.

In a Windows based computer (Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, XP) you can do so by doing the following:

Right click on ‘Network Neighborhood’ or ‘My Network Places’.

Click on ‘Map Network Drive’

Also, under the Tools menu of any window.

For Drive letter, select the letter K

For folder enter \\ucsd-irps1\home\username

Using your username instead. Then click on Finish

Logging into the Active Directory

In order to Print in the IRPS computer lab from your laptop, you must first log in to your campus Active Directory account.  If you do not, all of your print jobs will fail to complete.

When you attempt to access your home folder, or to print to an IRPS printer, from your laptop, you will need to log into the UCSD Active Directory.  Once you click on the mapped drive, you will see a login screen like this one:

For username, you need to enter your username in the following format:  ad\username.  For example, Johnny B. Student would enter the following:  ad\jstudent.  For password, you should enter your network password.  Shortly after pressing enter you will be given access to your home folder.  At this point you will also be able to print, as long as you have sufficient balance remaining in your printing account.

Once you are logged in, you can connect to the IRPS computer lab printers.  To do so, use the following steps:

Go to ‘Control Panel.’

Select ‘Printers and Faxes.’

Select ‘Add Printer.’

Click ‘Next’ in the first dialog.

Then select ‘A network printer’ from the following dialog.

On the next page, select ‘Connect to this printer…’ and then enter the address of the lap printer.  ‘\\ucsd-irps1\IRPS-Lab Laptop Queue’ is for regular print jobs and ‘\\ucsd-irps1\IRPS-Lab Color Printer’ is the correct printer for color documents.

When asked if this should be your default printer, select no.

On the final page, select ‘Finish.’

Finally, you should send a test print job to the printer to ensure that you are connected correctly.

In addition to being logged in, you must be on campus to use the IRPS lab printers.  You will not have access to them from any off campus location.
