Installing Sophos Anti-Virus

IR/PS has purchased licenses for Sophos Anti-virus to cover all faculty and staff. The general campus Sophos license covers all UCSD students, which includes IR/PS students. To make sure everyones Sophos Anti-virus installation is up to date, IR/PS is offering a secure update service to current faculty, staff, and students for their home and personal computers running Windows XP. Follow these directions to install the most current Sophos Client Installer on your home machine.

There are four steps to this process:
1. Download the Sophos Anti-Virus Installer.
2. Install Sophos Anti-Virus.
3. Configure Sophos Anti-virus to download the latest virus definitions from the IR/PS server.
4. Configure Sophos Anti-virus to scan and remove viruses from your computer.

Begin by clicking here. This will begin the download for the Sophos Client Installer.

Click Save to start the download process.
Select the Desktop and click Save.
To Install Sophos Anti-Virus
After the download completes and this window appears, click on Run.

Internet Explorer will show a warning. Go ahead and accept it by hitting Run again.
The next window will prompt you to specifiy the default location to store the setup files. Go ahead and accept the default location of c:\savxpsa by clicking on Install.
The installation process will soon begin after clicking Next a few times.
To Configure Sophos Anti-Virus to download updates

After the first Next button, you will be prompted for an address, username, and password. Enter in the address as shown in the screenshot (http://irpshelp.ucsd.edu/sophos/esxp). Enter the username as AD\username but use your own username. Enter your password twice for verification. Click Next to continue and complete the configuration of the installation.

After clicking Finish, Sophos should go through the process of downloading the latest updates and installing them. While this is running, you can still configure Sophos by right-clicking on the blue shield in your taskbar tray and clicking on Configure updating.

Note: If the username and password you entered during the installation process were incorrect, you will now have an opportunity to re-enter that information here. This can be seen if you see a white and red X over the blue shield.

After verifying that you have the correct username and password, click on the Schedule tab and change the time interval for updates to 120 minutes (2 hours). Otherwise, Sophos will be quite intrusive during normal usage of the computer, checking for updates as frequently as every 5 minutes.
