Connecting to the wireless network:

Connecting to the UCSD wireless network requires an 802.11b compatible wireless network card.  On newer laptops, this may come built into the network.  On older systems you will need to buy an add on device (either a PC Card, USB wireless adapter, or a Mac AirPort device.)

For Windows Operating Systems (based on Windows XP):

Connect wireless card, ensure that drivers are installed, and the connection is enabled.

You will be prompted that there are available wireless networks.  Click the indicator and proceed to the Wireless Network property page.

Select the network labeled ‘UCSD.’

You will also need to check the box that says “Allow me to connect to the selected wireless network, even though it is not secure.”  This message is generated because the UCSD wireless network is not configured to use WEP or any other types of wireless encryption.

This following message will confirm that you have successfully connected to the wireless network.

Once you have connected to the UCSD wireless network, you will need to authenticate your computer.  Despite being connected you will not be able to perform any network related functions until you have authenticated.  To authenticate, follow these steps:

Open a web browser and enter a URL (such as www.cnn.com)

You will receive a security message from you browser.  Click OK.

On the wireless control website, enter your campus username and password.

Then click on ‘Logon User.’

You can check your logged in status by going to http://login.ucsd.edu.

Caution:, when you plug your laptop into the network via an Ethernet cable, you should disable your wireless network device.  This will avoid potential network conflicts and other complications that may make you unable to connect to the network.  To do so, follow these steps:

Right Click on ‘My Network Places’ and select Properties.

Right Click on ‘Wireless Network Connection’ and select ‘Disable.’

To re-enable your wireless connection, follow the steps  above, selecting ‘Enable’ rather than ‘Disable.’

You should also avoid turning on any networking options that involve bridging or routing functions.  These can have serious consequences for your connection to the network, as well as others’ ability to connect.
